Unicorn Fountain

In the very centre of the Park, there is a beautiful Unicorn fountain.

Come, throw a coin and make a wish, the unicorn might just make it come true.

Sam sat on a bench near the fountain, looking at it for a minute, before she just relaxed. She pulled out a notebook, tracing the cover, before she opened it.

The pages were covered with her messy scrawl, but she found one that wasn't, and started to write, slamming the book closed the second she heard someone coming.

"Hey Sam, whatcha doing?" Max asked happily, holding an ice cream in one hand and a small cat in the other.

"hey Max. Nice cat." Sam said, putting the book away asap.

"Thanks! I rescued it from a tree - this little old lady was going on and on at me about it, and then when I got the thing down, she said it wasn't even hers! I thought I'd search around the park for any 'missing cat' posters, and if I can't find any, I think I'll keep her." she ate her ice cream thoughtfully. "Say, what was that little thing you shoved away so hurriedly?"

"It's probably best to check in with everyone else before you bring a cat home. Someone could be allergic. But, if nothing else, I'll talk to the kids at school." Sam said, smiling. "Didn't see any cat posters."

Adelaide had walked through the park for about an hour. So far three dogs and several pigeons had been frozen and tossed into the pond... She walked up to the fountain, ignoring the two not far from it.

Dipping her hands into the water, she sighed. Her long blonde hair had come loose from her braid during her walk, and she had not yet tied it back. The pale strands trailed across the water as she knelt down beside the fountain. It was a hot day and she was struggling with trying to maintain her inner temperature.

"Ah, good point. I hadn't thought about that" Max mused, taking a little icecream on her finger and feeding it to the kitten who licked it up happily. "Ugh, germs" Max remembered a little too late. "This warm weather is stifling"

Adelaide's vision blurred slightly and she stumbled against the fountain's stone basin. There a faint tinkling of what sounded like glass cracking or ice and she brought her hands up to her face, horrified to see that tiny cracks had appeared in her icy skin. "Odd." she muttered, blinking rapidly as her entire body shook from the heat.
Her body crumpled against the fountain, her head splashing into the water. ((not literally, she is still intact...)) She drifted in and out of consciousness, unable to move her limbs.

Sam ran over, picking the woman out of the water so she didn't die. She felt the coldness of the womans skin, and started to radiate the icy temperature, to help her cool down. Sam knew that she shouldn't be this warm.

Adelaide's white eyes opened, and as her sunglasses had fallen off when she had fallen into the water, the bright sun blinded her. The air felt cooler and although she was certain she was hallucinating, Adelaide felt someone holding her. Her body slowly absorbed the coolness in the air and the cracking skin began to repair itself.

Sam noticed her skin repairing, so she increased the coolness she let off. "You ok?" She noticed her squinting, so reached for the glasses she saw in the fountain.

Unable to see, even as her apparently real hallucination helped her with her glasses, Adelaide sighed, trying to get her mind to work. It would take several hours for her vision to return and she had no desire to be carried off to the hospital by whoever was now attempting to help her.
"Pocket." she whispered.

Sam nodded, searching her pockets. she found a peice of paper, wet, and dried it so she could read it. "Ok. I'll call him now." She said, punching the numbers into her phone. "Hello? Um...Hi. I've got someone here who's hurt....looks like the heat got to her. would oyu like to pick her up at the park?" Sam didn't stop with the coldness, since it seemed to help, een turning it up another notch, though it was...tiring to go so far.

Steven was on his way home when his cell phone gave its usual ring tone. He took one hand off the wheel to place a headpiece onto his ear. "Yeah-lo!" he greeted whoever was on the other end cheerfully. To his knowledge, only three or four people had his cell phone number: Ethelyn, Allura, Adelaide... and maybe Greg.

"Hello? Um...Hi. I've got someone here who's hurt....looks like the heat got to her. would oyu like to pick her up at the park?"

This certainly wasn't a voice he recognized. However, there was only one 'her' he knew that 1) had his cell number and 2) would not be able to tolerate the heat. "Two minutes. Maybe less. Can she hold out that long?" Steven inquired sternly, glancing around at the somewhat nonexistent traffic.

Screw this! Steven's mind growled as he sped up a little faster than the accepted speed limit to get to the Park.

Sam nodded. "Yeah, she'll last that long." She siad. She continued to cool off the woman. then realized something. "Hey, I don't think I ever caught your name...I'm Samantha."

"Adelaide." she muttered. Her body shuddered again as it attempted to pull the needed cool air much too quickly. She closed her eyes and tried to force her body back into its ice state. But it refused to as she instructed.
"Thank you..." she added, rather softly.

The villain hesitated for just a moment. Long enough to hear Addy say her name. "And I'm Steven," he replied The air conditioning had been put on full blast the moment he recognized precisely who was in need of help. Steven didn't normally do Heroic things... but he made an exception for people he knew and trusted.

"Listen, Sam - can I call you Sam? - I'm driving a black Mercedes Benz, and I'm just pulling up to the park. Do you see a black four-door Mercedes?"

Steven was just coming up to a stretch of road near the fountain now...

Max hovered behind Sam and the almost comatose woman, panicking slightly, the cat in her hand staring fixedly at the ice cream in her other while her saviour hopped around a bit in frustration. "Is she alright? Is she going to be okay? I wish I had slightly more helpful powers"

Sam shot Max a look. She turned back to Adelaide. "Ok. Steven? I'll help carry her." She looked back at Adeliade. "Guess you can't take the heat?" she said, putting her hands at the coldest tempo she could, before picking her up. "Ok. Let's go."

Adelaide said nothing as she was picked up from the ground. Her vision gone, she could do little but trust the woman.

Sam noticed the woman was silent, so siad, "Either you make a sound, or I'll have to assume you've fallen unconscious, and that would be enough to make me call the ambulance."

"Fine." she whispered, weakly. The word "ambulance" was more than enough to wake her from her stupor. But she could feel her mind sliding in and out of consciousness. If Steven didn't hurry, Adelaide knew she was going to be taken to a hospital and one doctor would be all it took to figure out that she was not only a super, but the villain who had attacked the city's plumbing... she probably wouldn't get life, but prison time would no doubt be apart of the doctor's orders.

Sam sighed. "ok. Well, your friend is here. Let's get you into his car." Sam walked quickly, getting her to the car.

Steven had left the ignition on as he got out of the car and opened the passenger-side door. "Sam, right?" he asked when he approached Adelaide's side. Technically that also made it Sam's side... "How is she doing?" Without waiting for an answer, Steven placed a very cold leather-gloved hand to Adelaide's forehead as they walked back to the vehicle. She was cooled off, but still felt a bit warmer to the touch than he was used to.
